Understanding How Pile Drivers Used

By Jennifer Allen

In the field of construction there is a definite need for heavy equipment that is dependable. The tools most used have been around for years and are known as pile drivers. There are a number of variations of this tool that continues to be in use all over the world. It is important to know the different types of this device to get an understanding of what it can do.

This type of equipment has been in existence for longer than many realize. There is evidence that the tool has been used for over 500 years. In fact, there is some evidence showing that the mechanical type has been around 5000 years or more. Modern tools have been fashioned after a tool run by steam that was created in the 1800s.

This tool forces poles, or pipes, down into the ground. These pipes are also called piles. They are used to support the foundation of building structures. This type of device uses weights placed on poles that are lifted in air and then forced down in the ground. Construction companies have been using this kind of tool for many years.

Since its creation, there have been various types of the tool being used. The differences in the tools typically involved the type of power and the method that is used in operation. Advances in technology has allowed for recycling of the tool over time. New technologies have increased the effectiveness for use on projects that are larger scaled.

For example, the diesel fueled hammers are a variation of the driver that is made up of piston weights and cylinders. This tool functions as an oversized two stroke diesel fueled engine. It drops a weight that initiates the discharge of the fuel which causes the release of the piston. When the fuel is heated it combusts and drives the piston back and the cycle begins again. This tool can be used consistently until the project is completed.

The diesel fluid device was once more popular than it is now. The reason for the decline in use is that the equipment is very loud and impacts the environment adversely. The vertical travel lead is another tool with adjustable pistons that make it possible for use for many different projects. In the United States, this tool is standard and once played an important role in the building of railroads.

Hydraulic hammers are todays version of the original tool that operated with diesel fuel. This tool produces less noise and poses less of an environmental hazard. It is particularly useful for larger projects. Additionally, this hammer produces less pollution than the diesel operated tool because it uses hydraulics rather than fuel. Since the parts constantly move and bang, it does produce a lot of noise.

The vibrating driver extractor, piling rig, and hydraulic press in, are other variations of the tool. Press ins are used for jobs in which a diesel hammer will be challenging. For bridge construction, a vibrating driver is ideal, and foundations require the piling rig. This is a multifaceted tool that remains an important part of the field of construction.
