Reasons Why Fishing Tournaments Are Recognized Among Many People

By Michelle Edwards

Fisherpersons not only like to go and catch fish for food and commercial purposes but they also do it for fun. Just like any other sports, these activities have also been turned into games where people can win money and have a good time at the same time. Fishing tournaments can take place on all the water bodies including lakes, rivers, and oceans. These also include waters that are covered in ice.

Competition is about winning and the winning teams get prizes which are determined by the number of fish caught within a specific period of time. People competing may be professionals who do it for commercial profits in which the determinant is weight of the number of fish caught. Others are competitors who do it for recreational purposes in which they measure the length of the fish and a sticker is put on it then returned into the water. The longest fish caught takes the prize home.

There are two types of individuals who compete. One can decide to do it alone on land while others do it as a group who go deeper into the water using canoes. With different categories there is a standard set of rules and prizing set.

Many states have come up with the use of permit in order to participate in the competition as a way of making sure the fish species are not endangered. For example in California, since 1975 any sport fish taking place in any California water bodies were required to have a permit in order to participate in the competition from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW).

California become protective of its water bodies with the increase of these competitions taking place every now and again. So after every sporting, a written document was required showing the performance of the competitions. This made even work easier by categorizing these events into two. The frequently done event and the yearly which in both cases a documented report was needed and crucial.

For instance in Miami, apart from the crazy parting, people travel from all over the nation to come and compete for the prize of 35000 US dollars. The Sailfish Kickoff which usually takes place in December broke world record in 2005 with 400 sailfish being captured in one day.

The internet has played a vital role in online fishing bringing many states together. This enables competition to take place in different parts of the world in different water bodies and being monitored at the same time. Invention of other tournaments have emerged online for instance the American Angler Challenge which makes it possible for one to fish at their favorite spot or which is near to them. All they have to do is register with the American Angler Challenge for the tournament you want and bring a camera along. Take two pictures of the fish caught with one picture having a verification code and send. Winners are announced after the end of the tournament which takes 24 hours.

These discoveries has made it possible in the conservation of fish in that different water bodies used in different states reduces the number of fish being killed as compared to one water body used for the competition worldwide. In the American Angler Challenge, you do not have to kill a fish if it is not what you are looking for or what is required. You can always throw back the fish into the water for its survival.
